The Rise of Dye Free Candy: What Every Retailer and Distributor Needs to Know

The candy industry is undergoing a major transformation - driven by new regulations, shifting consumer expectations, and the rising demand for dye free candy. What started as a niche movement among natural food retailers has evolved into a fast-growing requirement for mainstream buyers.

As a leading U.S. wholesale candy distributor and co-packer, Liberty Trade Corporation has seen this trend accelerate across multiple categories, especially within gummy and jelly candy. While the shift toward dye free gummy candy presents new opportunities, it also introduces complex challenges for suppliers and retailers alike.

Why Demand for Dye Free Candy Is Growing

The surge in demand for dye free candy is largely regulatory in nature. Several U.S. states, including Virginia, are restricting certain synthetic color additives in schools. At the same time, national retailers like Walmart and Whole Foods Market are implementing stricter ingredient standards for private-label and shelf brands - requiring candy to be free of artificial colors and flavors.

In April 2025, the FDA announced a major initiative to phase out all petroleum-based synthetic dyes from the U.S. food supply. This includes FD&C Red No. 40, Yellow No. 5 and 6, Blue No. 1 and 2, and other commonly used synthetic colorings. This regulatory shift underscores a national movement toward cleaner, naturally colored ingredients in confectionery and other foods.

Retail buyers now view “clean-label” as mainstream, not premium. This change is especially visible among schools, hospitals, and better-for-you retailers, which increasingly prioritize ingredient transparency.

At Liberty Trade Corporation, we’ve observed significantly higher sales and buyer enthusiasm for naturally colored and dye free candy across multiple channels, particularly online and through national retail partners.

Real-World Challenges of Dye Free Candy Production

Although demand is high, the transition to natural color candy is far from simple. Liberty Trade Corporation works closely with a network of manufacturers and suppliers that specialize in plant-based pigments, and the challenges they face are substantial.

Natural colorants - including anthocyanin, annatto, turmeric, chlorophyll, spirulina, and fruit and vegetable juices - require precise formulation and control. While turmeric, annatto, and chlorophyll perform well in gummies, blue shades remain unstable, and the cost of production is significantly higher than conventional alternatives.

Even with these challenges, the market momentum is clear. European buyers, in particular, are enforcing stricter limits on synthetic additives, accelerating innovation across the global confectionery supply chain.

In May 2025 the FDA approved three color-additive petitions for food use from natural sources, including Galdieria extract blue and Butterfly pea flower extract, which enables a range of shades including bright blues, purples and natural greens. This regulatory milestone offers manufacturers a new palette of natural-based color options, but it also signals a transition period: reformulating products to incorporate these newer additives involves investment, supply-chain alignment, stability testing, and cost adjustments.

Liberty Trade Corporation’s Perspective

While Liberty Trade Corporation doesn’t produce candy directly, our role as a retail candy distributor and co-packer gives us a clear view of how the dye-free trend is transforming sourcing, packaging, and retail strategy across the industry.

Many of our partner suppliers now offer naturally colored versions of their best-selling products, enabling us to meet the rising demand for dye-free gummy candy, jelly fruit slices, and other naturally tinted confections.

Driven by retailer interest and consumer preference, Liberty Trade Corporation is now expanding its gummy candy line with natural color options and launching a new range of jelly fruit slices made with plant-based ingredients and clean-label formulations.

Our Green Apple Gummy Bears and Real Fruit Jelly Candy, Real Fruit Berry Jelly Candy naturally colored, have already become top sellers on Amazon and in retail distribution - consistently outperforming artificially dyed versions in both sales volume and buyer enthusiasm.

This continued expansion reflects our commitment to evolving with market trends and providing retailers with modern, dye-free confections that combine bright color, clean ingredients, and genuine flavor.

Balancing Demand and Feasibility

Although the market for dye free candy continues to grow, it’s unlikely to dominate the mainstream candy segment within the next two to three years. Natural colors remain expensive and perishable, which limits scalability for large-volume manufacturing.

Still, retailers can expect a steady rise in consumer preference for natural color candy - especially in family-friendly, school-safe, and better-for-you categories. Clean-label products are no longer niche; they’re becoming the new retail standard.

Recommendations for Retailers and Distributors

  1. Diversify your inventory early.
    • Add several dye-free candy SKUs - such as gummies or jelly slices - to your seasonal or everyday lineup to test buyer response.
  2. Communicate your ingredient story.
    • Highlight “Dye Free Candy”, “No Artificial Dyes,” “Naturally Colored,” or “Plant-Based Ingredients” on packaging and product displays to attract ingredient-conscious shoppers.
  3. Partner with experienced distributors.
    • Work with a candy supplier  that has established relationships with dye-free manufacturers and understands the technical and logistical requirements for stable, high-quality products.
  4. Prepare for higher ingredient costs.
    • Retailers should plan for slightly higher wholesale prices but can offset this with premium positioning and clean-label marketing.
  5. Think long-term.
    • While natural colors are still evolving, the shift toward dye free gummy candy and natural color confections is irreversible. Retailers who adapt now will be well positioned when these standards become industry-wide.

The Sweet Future of Dye Free Candy

At Liberty Trade Corporation, we believe the future of confectionery lies in transparency, quality, and trust. Working with forward-thinking manufacturers, we continue to expand our assortment of dye-free candy, dye-free gummy candy, and naturally colored fruit slices that align with consumer values and retailer needs.

As ingredient regulations tighten and awareness grows, our mission remains the same: to make clean-label candy accessible, reliable, and profitable - for every season and every shelf.
